Spring Home Decor

Hellooo Friday! Who is excited for the weekend. Well spring has sprung in most of the country, and especially here in So Cal. I was able to spend a day last week down in beautiful San Diego touring a cruise ship, and I spent the beautiful drive home to Orange County in awe of the beautiful poppy fields that line the freeway. This weekend we are being super So Cal kids and heading back down to SD with a few friends to visit the flower fields in Carlsbad. This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time so I am super excited.

At the start of each season I bring out new decorations or run to the store to do a little make over on the house. Last month I had my eyes peeled. I already have a lot of neutrals that can really be used all year round, but I wanted a little brightness to our living area. This peach color is one of my favorites right now and I knew I wanted it splattered around the house this season. So I found some pillows, pulled out a few blankets and picked up a few fresh flowers.

Fresh flowers

Fresh flowers are the easiest ways to bring life to a space. I am obsessed with these orchids that Chris picked up for me for Valentine’s Day. I am shocked that they are still kicking. I notoriously have a black thumb so I am so proud that these are still bright and alive. (True life they may be fake and Chris could be lying to me just to keep me happy. I once killed two Christmas trees in one year.)

Lighter textiles

Pack up those heavy blankets and pull out the light stuff. Fabrics like cottons are light and  beathable which I love for the spring and summer. Some of my favorite memories growing up were at one of my girlfriend’s house where they always set the AC at like 58. I swear. And we would bundle up in blankets and watch movies all summer long. Now my cheap ass barely turns the AC to 72 but it doesn’t stop me from having cuddly blankets close.

Earth tones

Okay, you’re right, I have these all year round but I love me some wood tones, green leaves and natural fabrics. I love this map Chris made me for Christmas this year. The handmade art is amazing and I love that it is on the two by fours.

Bright Pillows and Blanket

Details like pillows and blankets are so easy to switch out season after season to recreate your space. Whether you are reusing holiday decor or getting the newest trend, like my metalic pillows that I am still using since Christmas, this is such a small detail that adds so much character to a space.

Fresh scents

Uhg CANDLES! I am obsessed with candles. There is at least one candle burning at all times in my house. Whether it’s scented or just simple tea lights. I love them and this Tullips candle by Yankee Candle is my favorite this season.

Favorite Spring Recipes

Happy second day of spring! All I have been thinking about is flowers, hiking, kayaking and yummy summer food. These past few weeks have been super busy but I finally see a light at the end of the long tunnel. I feel like we have been going non stop since before the Christmas season and spring is going to be a time to veg and relax… well a little bit.

This past weekend we finally got to get out of the house and be outdoors. Saturday night we spent at Disneyland where they are right in the middle of featuring the Main Street Electrical Parade. If you live local, go check it out before it’s gone this June. It was a big throw back to my childhood. I remember seeing it in Disney World when I was a kid, and seeing the same parade, and floats as an adult was really cool and definitely gave me a whole other appreciation for this piece of Disney magic.

Sunday morning we woke up early and headed down to Newport Beach to do a little whale watching. More on that later but the being out on the water was definitely what the doctor ordered. And we even got to hang out with some grey whales and dolphins.

Now that spring is here, I’ve been craving lighter meals. There’s something about the nice weather that makes me want to eat lighter and healthier. So today I put together a list of my favorite food I have featured on my blog that remind me of summer. Enjoy!

Cabbage, Spinach, Mozzarella Salad  Chicken Picatta

Grilled Beet & Goat Cheese Salad

Mediterranean Spaghetti

Homemade Bruschetta

This weekend I’m working both days, but Sunday morning we are doing something that I have been looking forward to for a long time. Hints: we will be on the water and it involves an extremely oversized animal. Keep an eye out on Instastory to see what we are up to.

Mascara Haul

This past winter I really gave my face a break. Winter is definitely the time of year where my face starts to break out, the lack of vitamin D makes my skin feel and look dead and lifeless. This winter instead of covering up like I usually do with foundations and concealers, I hydrated my face and drew the attention away from my skin and onto my lashes.

I’ve never wanted to try lash extensions. I have a terrible habit of rubbing my eyes and being a little aggressive when it comes to washing my face, so lash extensions would never work for me. I’d end up pulling them out before the week is up. But mascara, mascara is something that I can get on board with.

This winter I tried a lot of mascaras and was able to find the ones that I love, and the ones that I wasn’t so fond of. Step 1: Always, always, always use a primer. I have used both Lancome’s Cils Booster XL and also Clinique’s Lash Building Primer and I think I love them both equally. They both lengthen and coat fully which is all you really need in a primer. They both protect your eyelashes and I have noticed a lot less eyelashes falling out when I take my make up off at night.

My next step comes from Target. Yes this $6 mascara has been my favorite literally since I was in high school. Maybelline’s Full & Soft volumizes my eyelashes and makes them look super full. Which is great for my super thin eyelashes.

The next three mascaras I have been rotating. Clinique’s Lash Power small bristles separate all of my lashes to make them even fuller than with just the Full & Soft. Mary Kay has a very cool brush that both volumizes and lengthens depending which way you hold the brush. This is one of my new favorite mascaras because it is an easy one to throw in your bag and it literally does whatever you need.

My newest mascara for night time is Lancome’s Hypnose Doll Lashes. The pointed brush with wide bristles makes your natural eyelashes look like an amazing pair of falsies I love it! It’s the perfect these are my real lashes mascara, and you will have everyone thinking you are lying.

February Round Up

Can you even believe how fast February flew by? I feel like it was just a few weeks ago that our house was decorated for Christmas and now we are starting to think spring and sunshine. Which is something here in Southern California we miss so much. Mother nature really kicked our asses here in SoCal this month. We had sink holes, freeways shut down because they turned into rivers, mudslides, and hurricane forced winds. It was absolutely insane. But we are hoping for a little more outdoor activities for March.

February was packed with indoor activities. We had our food tasting at our wedding venue. We were pretty early for this but we defiantly wanted our parents there with us and we figured the sooner the better. So picking our food was a big check off of our wedding to do list. I also got to celebrate a huge milestone for one of my best friends and also another huge success for Chris.

My best friend Bryan had his photography featured a magazine with a four page spread of some of his shots. And this past weekend Chris’s new venue, House of Blues Gardenwalk, opened with a huge opening party. Chris has worked for House of Blues for the past three years and last May they closed up their location in Downtown Disney. After 9 months of being shut down, they opened up their new location, just down the street at Gardenwalk, an outdoor mall here in Anaheim. It was an amazing party with tons of media, celebrity guests and amazing music.

I had to prep for these out of living room activities. I feel like I’ve been in hiding on my couch since November, so this month, with spring on the horizon, I realized I had to start hydrating my face so a bi weekly sheet mask became my best friend. Full sheet masks, under eye masks, charcoal, aloe… they were all my best friends this month. And they all made Chris laugh at me, and try to take my picture, every time.

My favorites have been the SOO AE Green Tea Collagen mask I got in my February IPSY subscription, Que Bella Professional Moisturizing gel eye masks that you can get at Target and my all-time favorite agave lip mask by Bite that you can get at Sephora. But I am going to keep trying more and maybe put together a post of my favorite masks later in the spring.

Can anyone tell I am super excited for spring to come? What are your favorite spring activities?

We had to try the new brewery that opened close to our house. Stereo’s wheat beer, Hazy Jane…. YUM! Try it!

I am so sad that this room isn’t big enough to hold our entire wedding. But how cute is the barrel room at Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula. So cute.

Blackbird in Temecula is such a yummy brunch spot to check out pre-wine tasting.

Goodbye 20s, Hello 30s – Birthday Round Up

Well folks, today is the day. I am officially in the 30-35 age bracket… Yikes! Last year’s birthday was a little rough on me. I was really starting to feel the pressure that society puts on us as “kids in our 20s.” And honestly, your 20s really kind of suck.

Your early 20s are really great. You’re still living at home with mom and dad with little to no financial responsibilities. In my early 20s I had a blast! My girl friends and I went on vacations, went out the bar 3 nights a week, and were serious social butterflies. Then I moved out, had to start paying rent, bills and buying groceries. When you get into your mid to late 20s you realize pretty quickly that going out every night isn’t going to be the most effective way to get what you are going after anymore.

I spent the better part of my 20s working in retail. I was a merchant for a big retail chain and I’m not going to lie, it was a blast. I made a ton of friends and learned a lot about business, management and the art of sales. But when I realized I was living for work and my schedule was at the mercy of my work I realized, this probably isn’t going to cut it in a few years when I get married and have kids.

Which lead to my next little freak out of turning 29. Chris and I had been living together for four years and dating for about 3. We had discussed marriage and kids but I just wasn’t sure when that all was going to happen. I think most people can say, that in their late 20s they’re not where they thought, or hoped they would be and I was defiantly feeling that.

So needless to say, it was a little bit of a rough birthday. I didn’t love my job anymore, my relationship was taking a little longer than expected, and for the first time I felt my biological clock ticking. We had a nice dinner out, just the two of us and went home to have a glass of wine like the old millennials that we are.

Then a month later we got engaged and I got a new job. All in a matter of a week and a half. It was insane but defiantly worth the wait.

I realized that I was putting stupid pressures on myself (and Chris) because of what society had for expectations of where I should be in my life. I have friends who have their work life completely figured out, but have been completely alone for years, and then I have friends who have put their relationships before themselves and it has affected their work life and caused them setbacks.

The truth is, everyone has hurdles to overcome and everyone reaches milestones at their own accord. Some people take a little longer than others but one thing I defiantly learned in my last year of my 20s, is that your 20s actually kind of suck. I mean just a little. You have all of these expectations people make, you are learning who you are and what exactly you want to do and who you want to be with.

I am looking forward to my 30s. I have a career now that I can see myself growing in for a long time, and I have someone who is absolutely amazing and I cannot wait to start our lives together. We have a lot to look forward to in this next year and I can’t wait. For now, enjoy some photos from the past year.
